Working together to better support academic institutions

Geo-political, technological, economic, and environmental change are heightening the risks of disruption to access and information.  Research has already been lost. Institutions have increased their reliance on commercial cloud storage, and also risk vendor lock-in.

There remains a critical need for secure, community-governed digital preservation with human oversight and stewardship to help ensure long-term access to knowledge for future generations.

CLOCKSS and LOCKSS are working together to better support the preservation and access needs of academic institutions. Together, we offer a powerful alternative to purely commercial cloud preservation services.

Our shared vision emphasizes:

  • resilience through distributed preservation
  • community-led stewardship and trust
  • sustainable long-term access to preserved materials
  • support for diverse institutional and preservation needs

Together we are committed to shared values and the POSI principles.

We’ve heard clearly from the academic community about what matters most right now. Institutions want:

  1. Streamlined communication and coordinationbetween our organizations to make it easier for institutions to engage with our services and communities.
  2. Additional options for the Global LOCKSS Network, delivered through CLOCKSS.
  3. Expanded preservation support for a broader range of digital collections and associated metadata through CLOCKSS, leveraging LOCKSS expertise in connecting systems, services, and preservation workflows.

To support these goals, we have launched pilot projects to explore and develop  new service approaches. We will continue to share updates with our communities as this work progresses.

Institutions interested in learning more or participating in these efforts are encouraged to contact us at info@clockss.org.

With LOCKSS 2.0, the LOCKSS team is deepening its commitment to content preservation by implementing a REST API that enhances interoperability and facilitates the development of diversified content deposit pipelines. As such, the LOCKSS software continues to provide a secure foundation for CLOCKSS by focusing on the risks most likely to cause data loss in the real world, based on a comprehensive, openly documented threat model.
