Preserving Your Publications in CLOCKSS: A Step-by-Step Guide for Publishers

Thank you for considering CLOCKSS as your preservation service.

Here is an overview of the process and the information we will need. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@clockss.org, and we will be happy to help.

To Prepare:
  1. Ensure your content aligns with our Collection Development policy.
  2. Familiarize yourself with our service, fees, and contract.
To Apply:

Fill in the Information Form here

If you cannot access the form, please email the following information to info@clockss.org:

  • Your name, organization name, and email address.
  • The materials you are looking to preserve (e.g., journals, books, datasets, etc.).
  • The platform provider you work with, or if your content is on your own custom platform.
  • URLs to help us understand the type of content you would like to preserve.
  • Indicate if your content is subscription-based or open access. For subscription content, please specify roughly how many subscribers you have. For open access content, note that journals must be listed in DOAJ.

Review and Technical Evaluation:
We will review the submitted information and contact you if a technical evaluation of your content is needed. If so, we will ask you to enable preservation on your platform.

Platform-Specific Instructions:

OJS:

  • In the Website Settings section, on the Archiving tab, check the box to "Enable CLOCKSS".
  • Click on "Publisher Manifest" to review the manifest page. The resulting page should show a listing of your journal issues.

Other platforms - ask your platform provider to:

  1. Include the CLOCKSS Permissions Statement on the manifest page at the journal level and the landing page for eBooks (hidden in the HTML is fine):
    - CLOCKSS system has permission to ingest, preserve, and serve this Archival Unit.
    - CLOCKSS system has permission to ingest, preserve, and serve this open access Archival Unit.
    - For Creative Commons open access content, it is sufficient if the Creative Commons license is present with the appropriate 'rel="license"' attribute.
  2. Enable CLOCKSS IP addresses for the full text of the content to be preserved:171.66.236.0/24 (i.e., 171.66.236.0 through 171.66.236.255) Stanford University

Contract and Finalization:

After the technical evaluation is complete, we will send you a quote for a set-up fee. Content cannot be preserved in the archive without a signed agreement with CLOCKSS.
